The Experiencing Prison Oversight study is the first cross-national interview research on prison oversight bodies across the EU. NPMs and other oversight bodies have been randomly selected and received an email from prila at tcd.ie with an invitation to be interviewed. The interviews are being conducted in two phases to give oversight bodies space to deal with the pandemic, with a first phase in spring 2020 and a second phase in summer/autumn 2021. To do this, we are carrying out interviews with staff of NPMs and prison oversight bodies. Now, we want to understand the experiences of those who work in prison oversight. PRILA has already carried out the first EU+UK-wide survey of NPMs and prison oversight bodies here and we are very grateful to our participants for helping us to understand the structures for prison oversight. ![]() This data collection effort aims to better understand the experiences of staff who work in prison oversight across the EU+UK. To do so, we have invited a selected group of European Union (EU) Member States + UK to participate in the first interviews on prison oversight bodies. The research project is being carried out by Trinity College Dublin and has been funded by the European Research Council. Everything you discuss with us will be entirely confidential and you will not be identified in this research. We will discuss your role as an officer, your experiences of dealing with inspection and monitoring bodies and the courts, and the prisoner complaints system. Interviews can take place either online or by telephone and will last around one hour.
